The Aesthetic Principles of the Harmonium: The Essence of Expression (J. Verdin)
In this article, Joris Verdin describes the early history of the harmonium and its significance in the 19th century. Beginning in the 18th century, the need for a keyboard instrument combining variety of tone color with the capacity for flexible dynamic expression was acutely felt; attempts to create an instrument to meet these needs finally led to the development of the harmonium or "expressive organ". The importance attached to dynamic expression in 19th-century musical aesthetics is shown through numerous examples from treatises. The author also discusses the harmonium's influence on the organ with regard to composition, performance and instrument building
